About Level 3
From generative change to systemic change
This intermediate-level training explores how we support ourselves and the interaction within the metaphoric environment. It elucidates the generative change work principles taught at Level 2, provides a useful extension for creating generative change, and introduces a method for creating systemic change.
This systemic change can be brought about by examining the metaphoric structure as a whole rather than working with its components.
Please note that the outline of the sessions detailed below is only an approximation, and there may be some variation in the sequence in which we go through the work. Level 3 is largely built around the group’s experience, which varies each time.
Part 1
Context, Purpose, and The Metaphoric Environment
- The core component of a metaphor and what to look for in metaphoric elicitation.
- Embodied cognition and the physiological representation of metaphor, and how we support ourselves.
- Where and why: where you stand, what you stand for, what you don’t stand for, etc.
- How we connect and interact with our experiential, autogenic metaphor.
The Immersions and Other Lies
- Immersion metaphor. This is an in-depth examination of immersion metaphor in its various forms, issues of boundaries, and the handling of crisis and high-drama lifestyles.
- The false self, persona, personal transformation, and the death of the ego.

Part 2
Binds: To Whom and To What We Attach
- Attachment metaphor and relationship. A detailed examination of double binds in metaphor as represented by attachment symbolism.
- A detailed look at container metaphor symbolism and the relationship between container metaphors and other metaphoric taxonomies.
Fitting In, Putting on a Show, and Pleasing God
- Elevations and an examination of anxiety metaphors and how to work with anxious patients.
- “All the world is a stage.” Stage and performance metaphors and the relationship to the false self, persona.
An exploration of archetypes and their relevance to Metaphors of Movement, autogenic metaphor, and language.
